The Mountain Pine Beetle is a serious threat to our existing forests. These beetles affect both LodgePole and Ponderosa forests. These are not the only trees affected, but are the primary targets. Mountain Pine Beetles can devastate a forest, killing all trees in the area. Forest thinning and preventative spraying are the best ways to help control the spread. Ips beetle (engraver beetle)
IPS Beetle is a very damaging urban and mountain insect. The consequences of an infection are the same as Mountain Pine Beetle - death. These beetles are throughout the metro area, and are killing off many key large pines and spruce. With the hard drought years ago, our pines and spruce became extremely stressed. Bark beetles are attracted to stressed trees and will target them. The dieback generally starts at the top, but it will continue through the tree, eventually the whole tree will die. Our program of two applications a year has been very successful with controling this insect. Our program has been designed with the recommendations of CSU and the Forest Service. We highly recommend having your pines and spruce put on a program to help protect them from this deadly insect.
